From Passion to Profession
Mwanaidi, a resident of Makorora Ward in Tanga, specializes in weaving palm fronds, painting, and crafting items like fans and ribbon curtain tiebacks. Her love for craftsmanship is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Tanga, a region she proudly calls home.
“Tanga residents are cheerful, welcoming, and kind-hearted. This is what I love most about my city,” she shares.
Through the Global Opportunity Youth Network (GOYN) under TangaYetu program, Mwanaidi received training in weaving and painting skills that have helped her refine her work and create high-quality products at affordable prices.
Challenges in the Craft Industry
Like many young entrepreneurs, Mwanaidi faces challenges in sourcing materials, finding markets for her products, and raising awareness about the value of handmade crafts among local residents.
“Challenges are inevitable, but I believe in persistence. The more we educate people about the importance of local crafts, the more they will appreciate and support our work,” she explains.
To overcome these obstacles, she collaborates with six other young creatives in her Creative Art and Cultural Group, where they share skills and work together on projects.
A Vision for Tanga’s Future
Mwanaidi’s dream is to establish outlets where handmade crafts can be sold, making Tanga a recognized hub for creative industries. She also aims to create job opportunities for more young people through her work.
“I want to raise awareness about handmade crafts and establish shops to sell our products. This will not only support my business but also help other young artisans earn a living,” she says.

“Every endeavor comes with its challenges, but with persistence and dedication, you can go far,” she advises.

“I have met people I never imagined encountering, including businesspeople and national leaders,” she says.
