Implemented by SUGECO, the Youth Economic Empowerment Through Agribusiness project has successfully trained 47 young people in commercial horticulture production and cross-cutting agribusiness topics. As a result, these youth have developed the skills to independently manage the production of various fruits and vegetables at the training center, showcasing their capability without supervision.
The project has generated significant financial benefits, with the youth collectively earning over 9 million TZS from the sale of vegetables. Additionally, four youth groups have been formed and registered with Tanga City Council’s Community Development Office, further solidifying the project’s long-term sustainability.
The initiative has attracted widespread attention, drawing numerous visitors from Tanga City who came to learn from the project’s success. Extension officers from the city council also participated in the project, enhancing their skills and ensuring future implementation without the need for external consultants.
Moreover, the project’s impact has reached beyond Tanga, securing market opportunities in Mombasa, Zanzibar, and Dar es Salaam. The project’s national recognition was underscored by a visit from the National Torch, further highlighting its importance in empowering youth and promoting sustainable agribusiness practices.
