Implemented by AKM Glitters, the Empowering Youth in Poultry Value Chain for Sustainable Livelihood project has provided a pathway for young people to secure sustainable incomes through the poultry industry. Through coaching and mentoring sessions, youths were able to openly address issues like anger management, helping them develop both personally and professionally. The project was fully funded by AKM Glitters and its partner ILRI, with a total investment of USD 8,000.
Youth participants were also linked with their peers from Kilimanjaro, Lindi, and Mtwara through exchange visits organized in collaboration with ILRI and CALA (AGRA), fostering learning and opening trading opportunities. A total of 110 brooders and smallholder farmers were brought to Tanga to engage with the youth, with an additional USD 4,000 in funding provided by ILRI.
The project generated significant financial success, with profits and savings per group ranging between 5-6 million TZS, totaling approximately 30 million TZS across five groups. The investment capital of 35,000,000 TZS has been preserved and will be passed on to the next cohort of youth participants, ensuring continued growth and sustainability.
As part of their learning experience, the youth also visited various hatcheries owned by AKM Glitters to understand the entire hatching process, equipping them with valuable skills for their future in the poultry industry.
